🏆 What Eaton Is Building in Bellevue

Switchgear is the heavy electrical equipment that routes and protects power before it reaches a building. Eaton's April 8 announcement tied the expansion directly to the data center boom, citing nearly 3,000 U.S. data centers planned or under construction.

The company is not new to the metro. It already runs a facility in Omaha, and the release says those operations will move to Bellevue, with current employees transitioning over time. For applicants, that means an established local crew in a bigger building.

Bellevue's City Council voted unanimously on April 21 to approve up to $400,000 in LB840 economic development incentives for the project. Council discussion put the job figure at close to 220, so treat "more than 200" as the floor.

💼 The Jobs and What They Pay

Eaton has named three buckets: engineering, manufacturing and production. It has not published a role-by-role headcount for Bellevue, so we will not invent one. What the company's current Omaha postings show is the shape of the floor work.

Recent Eaton listings for assembly technicians in Omaha, including one specific to gas switchgear, posted $19 an hour as a starting guideline, depending on experience. An earlier electrical installation technician posting listed $20.50 – $23 an hour. Those are Omaha postings, not announced Bellevue rates.

The common requirements across those listings:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Living within roughly 50 to 60 miles of the plant, since relocation is not offered
  • Willingness to work overtime, including weekends
  • Preferred: about a year of electrical wiring, manufacturing or light construction experience, plus the ability to read drawings or wire diagrams

Day shift on those postings ran 6:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with a short Friday.

Why Bellevue, and Why Veterans Should Pay Attention

Bellevue Mayor Rusty Hike pointed to Offutt Air Force Base as a big part of the pitch. Service members rotate out every few years, and many of them leave with exactly the electrical, mechanical and maintenance background a switchgear line needs. The postings Eaton runs in Omaha also waive the residency radius for active-duty military.

The plant also sits close to the interstate, an easy commute from Papillion, La Vista, South Omaha and the Highway 75 corridor.
